The World Boxing Association (WBA) mourns the passing of former South African world champion Gerrie Coetzee, who lost his battle to cancer on Thursday, January 12 at the age of 67.

The news shocked the boxing world because of the prominence of Coetzee, nicknamed “The Boksburg Bomber” world champion between 1983 and 1984, who was born and died in Cape Town.

He achieved his feat when he defeated Michael Docks by a 10 round knockout in Richfield, USA on November 23, 1983. With this victory, he won the WBA heavyweight championship.

In the following fight, held in December 1984, he lost to Greg Page. He was always recognized for his courage, his great style and for having fought despite his hand injuries, which often forced him to spend long periods of time away from the ring.

In his career he faced opponents such as Frank Bruno, Iran Barkley, Leon Spinks, among other figures. He made his debut in 1974 and retired in 1997 as one of the most outstanding Africans in history.

The WBA regrets the passing of this great legend and sends its condolences to his family and friends in these difficult times. Rest in peace, champion.
