Venezuelan Gabriel Maestre and Ukrainian Taras Shelestyuk drew last Friday in their welterweight fight held in Montreal, Canada, after the judges gave cards of 96-94, 93-97 and 95-95.

It was an entertaining bout where both fighters had their moments and featured two 147-pound World Boxing Association (WBA) ranked fighters.

Maestre started the fight well with an aggressive style and good waist movements to get in good straight punches and go on scoring most of the first rounds. The South American carried the rhythm and worked with combinations to the body of his opponent to try to stop his movement.

In the second half of the fight, the Ukrainian began to improve thanks to the use of his jab and distance management, which helped him to counteract the work of Maestre to impose his style in rounds that were quite close and difficult to score.

However, Maestre came back with his boxing in the final rounds and finished a little better in the fight. The parity of both fighters was reflected in the judges’ scores and with the result they maintain their undefeated careers.
