The World Boxing Association (WBA) continues to strengthen the sport across the globe, and this week WBA Oceania hosted a Referee and Judge Training Seminar in Fiji as part of its ongoing commitment to the development of boxing throughout the region.

The seminar took place at the Fiji Sports Council in Suva, where approximately 30 officials gathered for an educational program led by some of Oceania’s most experienced instructors. The course was conducted by Armando García, who combined classroom instruction with open discussions and interactive exchanges, giving participants the opportunity to deepen their understanding of officiating while sharing valuable perspectives.

Among the key topics covered were fighter safety, referee mechanics, and judging criteria. Particular emphasis was placed on how clean punching, effective aggressiveness, ring generalship, and defense should be applied when evaluating and scoring each round under WBA standards.

“This seminar reflects our commitment to developing qualified officials and promoting consistent officiating standards throughout the Oceania region,” said WBA Oceania President Ferlin Marsh.

Participants also received educational materials designed to serve as practical references for their future assignments. The seminar marks the first phase of an educational program launched jointly by WBA Oceania and the local boxing authorities in Fiji.

The initiative will continue to expand throughout Fiji before reaching other countries across Oceania, with future programs planned not only for referees and judges but also for ringside physicians, inspectors, and timekeepers.

“We appreciate the enthusiasm shown by every official who participated, and we look forward to continuing this important work both in Fiji and across the rest of our region,” Marsh added.
