The year 2021 was full of action and great fights, many with merit to be the best of the year. There was one that stood out to take the World Boxing Association (WBA) Fight of the Year award and it is Juan Francisco Estrada vs. Román González 2, which was the most voted among the designated panel and the the fans in different surveys.

The bout took place last March 13, 2021 at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. It was a long-awaited rematch, as the two had faced each other nine years earlier, in 2012, with a unanimous decision victory for Gonzalez.

This time it was Estrada who got the victory by split decision in a close fight, but above all full of action and good boxing during the 12 rounds. With their characteristic style, both fighters stood at close range and threw a high volume of punches, but put on a great show for the world.

It i s a longstanding rivalry in boxing and the Mexican got his revenge on the Nicaraguan, but the great news is that both will return to the ring in March 2022 to complete the trilogy in what looks to be another great showdown.

The WBA congratulates Estrada and Gonzalez on their 2021 award and, like the rest of the world, is anxious to see them back in the ring.
