The World Boxing Association (WBA) has granted a 30-day extension to the negotiation period for the WBA minimumweight world title bout between René Santiago and Daiya Kira, following a request from the parties involved, who continue working toward an agreement for the mandatory championship contest.
The original negotiation deadline expired on June 2. After reviewing the request, and in an effort to protect both fighters while providing them with the opportunity to pursue the best possible options for their careers, the WBA Championships Committee and WBA President Gilberto Jesús Mendoza agreed to exercise flexibility in this matter.
The Championships Committee will also conduct a review of the division in order to make decisions that not only provide flexibility to the champion, but also help maintain activity within the weight class and continue creating opportunities for the top-rated contenders in a division rich with talent and high-level fighters.
The pioneer organization has remained in direct communication with all parties involved, closely monitoring the situation throughout the process. The decision was made with the goal of benefiting the fighters while also serving the interests of the sport and boxing fans worldwide.
Any future decisions regarding the matter will be made in accordance with WBA rules and regulations and will be communicated in a timely manner.
