The World Boxing Association (WBA) Championship Committee, in conjunction with the Rankings Committee, conducted an extensive review and officially approved this Saturday’s WBA Heavyweight World Championship bout between champion Murat Gassiev and Germany’s Peter Kadiru in Russia.
Gassiev had originally been scheduled to defend his title against Tony Yoka, but the French contender was forced to withdraw after suffering a late injury, prompting the search for a replacement opponent.
Gassiev’s team requested special authorization for Kadiru to step in as the new challenger. The German, who currently holds a WBA continental heavyweight title, brings a professional record of 23 victories, 1 defeat, and 13 knockouts into the championship opportunity. Following its evaluation, the Committee determined that Kadiru possesses a strong professional résumé, is fit to compete, and holds the appropriate license from the supervising commission, making him eligible to challenge for the world title.
Under Article 6.04 of the WBA Bylaws, the WBA Championship Committee is empowered to recognize championship contests worldwide. Based on those provisions, the bout received official approval on July 8.
Gassiev will be making the first defense of the heavyweight crown he captured on December 12 with a knockout victory over Kubrat Pulev in Dubai.
