In a huge upset, late sub Bahodir Mamadjonov (13-1, 9 KOs) scored a ninth round TKO over previously unbeaten WBA #3 lightweight contender Angelo Santana (14-1, 11 KOs) on Friday night at the Treasure Island Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. Santana dropped Mamadjonov with a jab. Mamadjonov however hung in and dropped Santana in round eight with a series of body punches. The Uzbeki put Santana down twice in the ninth and the bout was waved off by referee Kenny Bayless. Time was :51.

Santana was originally slated to face #4 rated Carlos Cardenas for the WBA interim lightweight championship on te card, but after Cardenas bowed out last week with a shoulder injury, Mamadjonov stepped in on about a week’s notice and took full advantage of the opportunity.

“One week notice and I win by that kind of knockout,” said Mamadjonov. “The first couple of rounds he (Angelo Santana) was difficult to figure out but once I did I just got more aggressive. The hard work paid off. I came to the United States to be a champion. I want to win a world title and this was the first step. I’m just starting. It’s going to be one belt at a time…Santana hits really hard and I respect him but I could see he was getting tired in the sixth round after I hit him with a body shot.”

Santana said the bout was stopped too quickly. “The referee stopped the fight. I tell you I was still in it. I landed two big left hands earlier in the round. We were in a good fight and it should have continued. Nothing against Baha, he’s a good fighter, but I want a rematch. The last knockdown came on a slip. I slipped after throwing a punch.”

In an important WBA light heavyweight eliminator between unbeaten fighters that was disappointingly not included on the Showtime telecast, WBA #7 Marcus Oliveira (25-0-1, 20 KOs) scored an exciting eleventh round TKO over WBA #2 Ryan Coyne (21-1, 9 KOs). The bout was waved off by referee Jay Nady after Coyne was floored twice in the eleventh. Time was 1:15. Detailed round-by-round report of the non-televised Oliveira-Coyne clash below…

Unbeaten jr welterweight Amir Imam (9-0, 8 KOs) scored a devastating second round KO over Jeremy Bryan (16-3, 7 KOs). A huge right abruptly ended matters at 2:13. Imam stated, “I had to figure him (Jeremy Bryan) out in the first round. I doubled up my jab in the second round and hit him with the big right that starched him. Some would say I took too big of a bite but I was composed, relaxed and knew what I had to do….Line ‘em up and I’ll knock them down.”

Bryan said: “I don’t really feel like talking because I still feel a little woozy. I expected so much more. I trained so hard. This is very disappointing. I had a lot going on. This was my first big fight on TV since 2004. I had a good fan base that came in for the fight. I think I got a little over-anxious and it cost me but I am a warrior. I’ve come back before and I’ll come back again.”

In an upset, jr middleweight Marcus Willis (13-2-2, 3 KOs) won an eight round majority decision over James De la Rosa (21-2, 12 KOs). Scores were 76-76, 78-74 and 77-75 for Willis. “I was fighting for Don King and I wanted to show him I have what it takes,”said Willis. “I knew he (James de la Rosa) thought he was a bigger puncher, but I knew I was the better fighter. I don’t like to play for the crowd although I like it when they’re happy like this. I fight for God, my team and myself, and I’ve got a lot more to show everyone.”

“I felt good. I needed these rounds. I got a little careless in the seventh round and he (Marcus Willis) caught me with a good shot,” said De la Rosa. “I’m not a judge but I thought I did enough to win tonight. If I wasn’t coming forward, there would have been no fight. I’ll be back from this one for sure.”

Unbeaten heavyweight Trevor Bryan (7-0, 5 KOs) pounded out a six round unanimous decision over Alvaro Morales (6-12, 7 KOs).

Oliveira-Coyne round-by-round report

Round 1: A feel-out round with both fighters with both trying to establish their jab. Oliveira is the taller and bigger of the two fighters. Suddenly, they both tried to start landing power punches (lefts from Coyne and rights from Oliveira) just before the bell.

Round 2: Oliveira starts throwing combinations and working Coyne’s body. Oliveria was the busier fighter and probably won the round by sheer volume of punches alone. Message sent: Ryan Coyne has a fight on his hands tonight.

Round 3: Oliveira comes out from the beginning throwing combinations finished with powerful right hands. Coyne is trying to stay in this one, still throwing jabs and moving. More balanced body work from Oliveria, culminated with powerful rights. Coyne rallies at the end of the round with left hands that land. Crowd cheers approvingly at the bell.

Round 4: Coyne does better avoiding power shots in this round, and he landed some significant left hands. With 10 seconds left, Oliveira threw some thudding power shots that echoed throughout the Treasure Island ballroom, which could have tilted the judges for Oliveira in this round.

Round 5: All in all, Coyne is hanging in there with a bigger, stonger guy. Will be interesting to see if he tires from the good body work Oliveria is doing. Coyne is the busy fighter in the middle of the round, landing effective jabs and left-handed shots. He’s a very determined fighter. His effort has slowed Oliveira’s output greatly. JUST BEFORE THE BELL, OLIVEIRA LANDS A PICTURE-PERFECT RIGHT-HAND POWER SHOT THAT SHOOK COYNE AS THE BELL SOUNDED. Still could be Coyne’s round, but you never know with a finish like that.

Round 6: Oliveira starts of the sixth where he left off in the fifth. He picks up the tempo again and lands three- and four-punch combinations that bloody Coyne’s nose. Coyne fights on but he’s tiring a bit. He wants to be the aggressor, but he doesn’t land as well as Oliveira, who’s a better two-fisted fighter.

Round 7: Coyne lands his first uppercut of the fight. Oliveira continues to work up and down, but his big right hand seems to be doing the best for him. Coyne is trying to out-work his opponent in a valiant effort. Oliveira looks like he may be waiting for his second wind in this round that Coyne may be winning. Referee Jay Nady stops the fight to have the doctor look at Coyne’s nose and warns Oliveria to watch the headbutts. Fighters flurry in the last 15 seconds, with Oliveira landing a big left hook. Still should be Coyne’s round. Now conditioning may determine the fight.

Round 8: Coyne the busier fighter in the first half of the round while Oliveira continues to land the more telling shots. Oliveira steps up the tempo and Coyne tries to respond. Could Coyne have a conditioning edge? Coyne begins to step up his jab–best level of jabs in the fight. Oliveira responds with hard right hands to the head just before the bell.

Round 9: Oliveira seems to sense at the outset that he needs to win this round decisively. He is throwing punches with bad intentions, which seems to slow Coyne a bit. Coyne, however, still lands punches, but they are not as powerful as the ones Oliveira lands. Just when you think Oliveira will slow down, he seems to respond with more withering combinations. Right at the end of the round, those combinations stopped Coyne for a moment.

Round 10: Fighters are in close, trying to make something happen. Both have exerted a lot of energy in the previous rounds. Coyne staying inside too much, where he can’t score. Having said that, Coyne flurries with combinations for 30 seconds that swing the pedulum towards him. Oliveira responds violently with a series of punches just before the bell that may have swung the round back to him. Wow. Very good light-heavyweight fight.

Round 11: Oliveira started where left off at the end of the 10th rounds, stalking Coyne and throwing punches with reckless abandon. Two right hands followed by a left hook left caused Coyne to crumble to the mat in a neutral corner. He righted himself, but Oliveira chased him into the ropes on the opposite side of the ring and battered Coyne for about 20 seconds, with Jay Nady watching closely, before Coyne dropped to one knee and Nady waved off the action then and there. TKO 11 – 1:15.

At the end of 10 rounds the three judges had it 99-91, twice, and 98-92, all for Oliveira.

Oliviera-Coyne Post-Fight Ring Quotes

Marcus Oliveira: “Coyne came to fight but I figured him out in the sixth round when I realized I could stand right in front of him and only I could hurt him.

“I made sure to work up and down. When I went to the body, I noticed he would drop his right hand so I’d unload a left.

“I dropped him the first time with two right hands and a left hook. The same flurry ended the fight moments later on the other side of the ring.”

Ryan Coyne: “I could have finished but he (Oliveira) has a great left hook. I felt good until I got caught with that headbutt. I was hanging in there. It was a good fight. He is a helluva fighter.

I thought it was nip and tuck. After I caught the headbutt, it was very difficult to move forward. It impacted my stamina and I couldn’t see. I still can’t see. But I give him all the credit. He’s a great fighter.”

Con gran sorpresa, Bahodir Mamadjonov (13-1, 9 KOs) se anotó un TKO en el noveno asalto al hasta entonces invicto Angelo Santana (14-1, 11 KOs) retador Nº 3 de la AMB el viernes en la noche en el Treasure Island Resort & Casino en Las Vegas. Mamadjonov fue a la lona por un Jab de Santana. Mamadjonov se recuperó y envió a Santana a la lona en el  octvavo con una serie de golpes al cuerpo. El uzbeko lanzó a Santana a la lona dos veces en el noveno y el árbitro Kenny Bayless detuvo la pelea. Tiempo: 51.

Santana estaba programado originalmente para pelear por el título interino ligero de la AMB con Carlos Cardenas clasifcado Nº 4, sin embargo Cárdenas reportó una lesión en el hombro y se retiró del compromiso. Mamadjonov aprovechó y aceptó la oferta una semana  antes del evento.

Voy a ganar una faja a la vez… Santana pega muy duro y yo lo respeto pero pude ver que estaba cansado en el sexto asalto y lo golpee al cuerpo.”

Santana dijo que detuvieron la pelea muy pronto. “El árbitro detuvo el combate. Te digo que yo estaba bien. Le propiné dos buenas izquierdas al principio del round. Teníamos una buena pelea y yo podia continuar. No tengo nada contra Baha, es un buen peleador pero yo quiero una revancha. La última caída fue por un resbalón justo cuando lance el golpe.”

En una importante pelea eliminatoria de los pesos semi pesados entre dos invictos, que lamentablemente no se incluyó en el tiempo de transmisión de tv, donde el retador Nº7 de la AMB. Cus Oliveira (25-0-1, 20 KOs) se anotó un KO muy emocionante sobre el Nº 2 Ryan Coyne (21-1, 9 KOs). El árbitro Jay Nady detuvo el combate luego que Coyne fue derribado dos veces en el undécimo. Amir Iman (9-8, 7 ko’s) se anotó un devastador KO en el segundo asalto sobre Jeremy Bryan (16-3, 7 KOs). Un tremenda derecha terminó abruptamente el combate a los 2:13. Imam declaró: “lo descifré (Jeremy Bryan) en el primer round.  Redoblé mi jab en el segundo round y lo golpee con un gran derechazo que lo almidonó. Algunos dirían que mordí más de lo que podría tragar, pero estaba bien, relajado y sabía lo que tenía que hacer… pónganlos en fila y los noquearé a todos.”

Bryan dijo: “realmente no quiero hablar porque todavía me siento un poco mareado. Yo esperaba mucho más. Entrené muy duro. Esto es muy decepcionante. Yo tenía un montón de cosas sucediendo al mismo tiempo. Esta fue mi primera gran pelea en la televisión desde 2004. Tuve una base buena de fanáticos que vinieron a verme pelear. Creo que estuve muy ansioso y me costó. Pero soy un guerrero, y regresaré.”

Marcus Willis (13-2-2, 3 KOs) mediano jr, ganó una decision mayoritaria en ocho asaltos, sobre James De la Rosa (21-2, 12 KOs). La puntuación fue 76-76, 78-74 77-75 para Willis. “Estaba peleando para Don King y quería mostrarle  que tengo mucho que dar” dijo Willis. “Yo sabía que James de la Rosa se creia un mejor pegador, pero yo sabía que soy mejor peleador. No me gusta pelear por el público pero  su algarabía me alegra. Peleo por Dios, mi equipo y por mi mismo, y aún tengo mucho más que que mostrarle al mundo.”

“Me sentía bien.  Necestiaga estos asaltos. Estuve un poco descuidado en el round 7 y el  me pescó con un buen golpe.” dijo De la Rosa. “No soy juez, pero creo que hice lo suficiente para ganar esta noche.  Si no hubiese atacado, no habría pelea. Yo esty seguro que regresaré.

El peso completo Trevor Bryan (7-0, 5 KOs) ganó por decisión unánime a Alvaro Morales (6-12, 7 KOs).

Round 1: round the estudio con ambos peleadores tratando de establecer sus jabs. Oliveira es el más alto de los dos. Repententinamente, ambos comienzan a lanzar golpes fuertes. (izquierdas de Coyne y derechas de Oliveira) justo antes que sonara la campana.

Round 5:  En definitiva , Coyne está alli con un contendor mas grande que el. Sera interesante ver si se cansa del trabajo al cuerpo que viene haciendo Olivera.  Coyne es un peleador ocupado en la mitad del asalto, lanzando jabs efectivos e izquierdazos. Es un boxeador muy determinado.    Su esfuerzo ha reducido a Oliveira. JUSTO ANTES DE LA CAMPANA OLIVEIRA LANZA UNA FUERTE DERECHA  DE PELICULA  TAN PERFECTA QUE TAMBALEO A COYNE JUSTO AL SONAR LA CAMPANA.   Todavía podría ser un round para Coyne, pero uno nunca sabe con un final como este.

Round 6: Oliveira comienza el sexto, donde quedó en el quinto. Retoma el ritmo nuevamente  y lanza combinaciones de tres y cuatro golpes que hacen sangrar la nariz de Coyne. Coyne combate pero se cansa un poco. Quiere ser el agresor, pero no es efectivo como Oliveira, que es un mejor peleador por ambas manos.

Round 7: Coyne pega su primer uppercut de la pelea. Oliveira continua trabajando arriba y abajo, pero su gran derecha parece que hace todo el trabajo. Coyne trata de sobreponerse a s oponente en un valiente esfuerzo.   Oliveira parece que esperar un segundo aire que Coyne está ganando. Referee Jay Nady detiene el combate para que el doctor revise la nariz de Coyne y advierte a Oliveira que cuide sus cabezazos. Ambos peleadores aumentan sus furia en los ultimos 15 segundos. Oliveira lanza un gran gancho de izquierda. Aun podria serun round para Coyne. Las condiciones pueden determinar la pelea.

Round 8: Coyne es el peleador mas ocupado en la primera mitad del asalto,mientras que Oliveira continua lanzando mas golpes. Oliveira aumenta la agresion y Coyne trata de reponder.  Podria Coyne  tiene un punto condionado?   Coyne comienza a aumentar su jabs, los jabs de mejor nivel de la pelea.   Oliveira responde con derechazos a la cabeza justo antes de la campana.

Round 9: Oliveira parece sentir que debe ganar claramente este asalt. El lanza golpes con malas intenciones, lo que hace que Coyne disminuya un poco el ritmo. Sin embargo, Coyne, aun lanza golpes pero no son tan poderosos como lo que pega Oliveira. Oliveira pega. Justo cuando pensabas que Oliveira reduciria su velocidad, parece responder con mas combinaciones. Justo al final del asalto, esas combinaciones detienen a Coyne momentanemente.

Round 10:  Ambos peleadores estan tratando de hace que algo pase. Ambos  han ejercido mucha energia en rounds previos. Coyne se queda dentro mucho tiempor donde no puede anotar. Dicho esto,  Coyne lanza ráfagas de combinaciones por 30 segundos que inclina el pendulo a su favor. Oliveira responde violentamente con una serie de golpes, justo antes de la campana que pudiera inclinar el asalto de nuevo a su favor. Wow. Que pelea tan buena de light heavyweight.

Round 11: Oliveira comenzó donde dejor las acciones en el round 10, acosando a Coyne y lanzando golpes con abandono temerario. Dos derechazos seguidos por un gancho de izquierda que hicieron que Coyne cayera a la lona en una esquina neutral. Se enderezó pero Oliveira lo persiguió a las cuerdad en el lado opuesto del ring y bapuleó a Coyne por  20 minutos, Jay Nady observaba de cerca, antes que Coyne cayera de sobre una rodilla y Nady detuvo las acciones. TKO 11 – 1:15.

Al final del round 10 los tres jueces tenian la pelea 99-91, en dos tarjetas y 98-92, todos Oliveira.

“me aseguré trabajarlo arriba y abajo. Cuando golpeaba abajo, me dicuenta que bajaba su mano derecha asi que yo lanzaba la izquierda.”

Ryan Coyne: “Pude haberlo acabado pero tiene un gran gancho de izquierda. Me sentia bien hasta que me golpeo con la cabeza. Trate de mantenerme. Fue una gran pelea. Es un peleador con mucho coraje.

Pense que era un nip tuck.  Luego que lo pezque con el cabezazo, fue dificil moverme hacia adelante, además impactó mi energía  no podia ver. Pero le doy el crédito. Es un tremendo peleador.”
