The World Boxing Association super featherweight world champion, Roger Gutierrez, is only waiting for the date definition for his mandatory fight against the American Chris Colbert, and said that “we already have our work plan”, convinced that despite the conquest and first successful defense of his universal diadem, “I haven’t achieved anything yet”.
In a meeting with the Venezuelan press on Monday in Caracas, the Zulian Gutierrez talked about his future, and recalled his fights against René Alvarado of Nicaragua, the first one that won him the title, and the second one which allowed him to consolidate his position.
” I have not achieved anything yet,” emphasized “The Kid”.
“I delivered for my parents. My colleagues and my team know what I went through in preparation for the world title fight. Losing my mother a few weeks before the fight was very hard. They know what I went through, but I promised her that I was going to fight and thanks God I was able to keep my promise. Then, in preparation for the second fight, we had many physical setbacks, but we also overcame them and managed to get the victory. But nothing has changed, I’m still the same, because I know how hard it was for me to get here, and even so, I haven’t achieved anything yet. There is a long road ahead, new challenges, there is my family and the people who believe in me and who expect a lot from me and I will fight for them, for Zulia and for my country. I am ready”, he said.
Roger Gutiérrez, who is fluent and has clear concepts, is waiting for the definition of his next fight. The World Boxing Association ordered a mandatory fight against the American Chris Colbert, who was interim champion of the organization. All that remains is an agreement between Golden Boy Promotions and PBC.
“It will be a great fight. We know Colbert is a great boxer, stylist, he moves a lot, a little dirty when it comes to fighting, he gives rabbit punches, connects to the kidneys, and it will be a very difficult fight. But it is not impossible to beat him, he is one of the best in the division, but if I beat Colbert I will consolidate myself in the division. We know that between Colbert and me, I am the puncher, and we already have our work plan, to be very fast, to take the initiative,” he said.
The closing of the trilogy with Alvarado meant the closing of a cycle for Gutierrez, who made a tour of his experiences prior to winning the title.
“I really have to thank the World Boxing Association, its president Gilberto Mendoza, Golden Boy, my promoter and my team for always believing in me, especially when my mother died. We work on the basis of a fixed plan for Rene (Alvarado). We know he is a fighter who always goes to the front who keeps punching no matter what, he never stops pushing. So our mission was not to be a fixed target for him. Unfortunately, I suffered a right hand injury at the beginning of the fight, which prevented me from hitting hard in a row. But that did not stop me from keeping my working plan, I kept him at a distance, and when I was too close I hugged him, I worked a lot with my left, it was not a showy fight, but I am a boxer, I will fight whoever I have to fight, with intelligence, and that is what helped me to win and defend the title”, he finished.
While he is waiting for his next defense, Gutierrez carries out social initiatives in Maracaibo, and declared himself ready to start the first stage of his training in this city and continue the following phases in California.
