Mary Spencer vs. Mikaela Mayer: High-Caliber Clash in Montreal

This Thursday, October 30, women’s boxing will take center stage for a historic night at the Cabaret du Casino de Montréal, where Canada’s own Mary Spencer (10-2, 6 KOs) will defend her WBA super welterweight world title (154 lbs) against American star Mikaela Mayer (21-2, 5 KOs).

At 40 years old, Ontario native Spencer will make the second defense of her WBA belt—and her first as the regular champion—after claiming the title in April with a victory over Ogleidis Suárez. Known for her power, reach, and Olympic pedigree, Spencer enters as the established queen of the division, boasting both physical advantages and home turf. Her style blends sharp distance control with the ability to close strong in exchanges.

For this camp, Spencer went back to her roots. The Canadian conducted most of her training between Detroit and her hometown of Windsor, just as she did before her last fight, once again teaming up with her longtime coach, Karo Ro.

Mayer, 35, is no stranger to world championship gold. The former unified champion will be chasing her first belt under the WBA banner. Coming off back-to-back wins over Sandy Ryan, the American moves up in weight brimming with ambition and confidence. Her technical skillset, movement, and high punch volume could be key assets in neutralizing Spencer’s strength and pressure.
