Mary Kom, six-time Olympic style boxing world champion, decided not to participate in the upcoming World Elite Championships, nor the 2022 Asian Games, the Indian Boxing Federation said in a statement.

“I would like to retire to give the opportunity to the relay generation to make a name for themselves in the sport and gain experience,” said Kom who will, however, participate in the next edition of the Commonwealth Games.

On his part, Ajay Singh, president of the Boxing Federation of India, said, “Mary Kom has been the standard bearer of Indian boxing in the last decade and has inspired countless boxers and sportspersons across the world. We fully respect her decision, and it is a testament to her character as a champion to make way for other female boxers.”

Undoubtedly, Mary Kom was one of the best boxers and left her name written in the history of this sport in which she also won the bronze medal at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
