Venezuelan Erik Leon became the new WBA-Continental Americas Super Lightweight champion after defeating Mexican Juan Marcos Rodriguez by unanimous decision last Friday in Mexico City.

Leon started very well in the contest. In the very first round he was able to take his opponent to the canvas. “El Mudo”, as the Aztec is known, was not intimidated and came out for the second round ready to take the round. The fight was a give and take, in which the best part was for the South American. However, Rodriguez was able to ride out the storm and did not kiss the canvas again despite being hurt in some parts of the bout. In the end the judges voted: 97-93, 96-95 and 96-93, all in favor of the Venezuelan.

“I did not expect such a tough fight, the opponent resisted the impacts and that I hit hard and he endured, he swelled up and never gave up”, said Leon and added: “I was surprised that we reached the scorecards, I thought I would knock him out before the fifth episode. But he was a tough and tough fighter who knew how to adapt to the fight”.

Thus, the Venezuelan improved his record to 15 wins, 13 by knockout, one loss and one draw. While Rodriguez dropped his resume to 10 wins, 8 by knockout, and 4 losses.
