The World Boxing Association, through its WBA Future Champions program, has taken another major step in the development of amateur boxing in Panama with the official launch of the country’s first ranking system for youth boxers. The groundbreaking initiative is designed to organize, evaluate, and professionalize grassroots boxing while providing a competitive and safe pathway for young athletes chasing future world titles.
Alfredo Mendoza, Director of WBA Future Champions Panama, explained that the primary goal of the project is to strengthen the nation’s developmental boxing structure while accurately measuring each athlete’s progress. He emphasized that producing elite-level fighters requires a comprehensive evaluation system capable of tracking every stage of a boxer’s development. Mendoza also stressed that, although the program is built around high-level competition, athlete safety and long-term well-being remain its top priorities.
Luis Niño, a member of the program’s technical staff, outlined how the innovative system operates. Unlike traditional rankings, this is not simply a static list but a dynamic tracking platform that follows each boxer from his or her competitive debut all the way to the point of becoming a world-title contender. Every athlete receives a unique identification number beginning with the WBA-PA code, allowing the program to document each competitor’s complete competitive history and progression.
The rankings are divided into age and gender categories, beginning with the Under-13 Scout Series, followed by the Under-15 Academy Draft, the Under-17 Rising Stars division, the Under-19 Next Gen category, and finally the Elite, or Main Roster, level. Competition is structured around annual seasons, with the program currently operating its second season of 2026. At the start of each new campaign, every athlete’s accumulated points are reset to zero, ensuring an equal starting point for all participants.
Ranking positions are determined through a detailed points system based on official bout results. A knockout or technical knockout victory awards the winner five points, while wins by referee stoppage for safety concerns, retirement, or walkover are worth four points. Unanimous decision victories earn three points, while split decision wins are worth two. Draws award one point to each boxer. In the event of a disqualification, the winner receives four points, while the offending boxer is penalized by losing two points from his or her total.
Athlete safety is reinforced through a comprehensive set of official regulations governing age divisions, medical protocols, scoring criteria, and sportsmanship standards. All bouts are contested using approved equipment supplied by the local federation and officiated by certified WBA referees and judges, ensuring every result is officially recorded as part of each boxer’s competitive record.
