From Australia to the world, the local Sarah Higginson won an eight round fight over Philippine Charimae Salvador to win the World Boxing Association Oceania Regional Light Flyweight belt on Friday at the Metro City in Perth.

In a tough back and forth bout, where the local had to put all her efforts to overcome the pressure of her opponent, Higginson showed the capitalization of her experiences and her desire to get into the list of the best in the world.

The Australian representative brings with her a story of inspiration and self-improvement. When she was in her twenties and her father died of diabetes, Higginson, who proudly carried 120 kg for her 18 years, decided that she would lose weight in order to be healthy and not create another suffering to her family.

That’s how she came to boxing with trainer Dale “Big Rigs” Phillips who saw her potential, perseverance and strength. Sarah made 15 amateur bouts, of which she only lost 2 and by 2020 she made the jump to professionalism with a draw. She had three consecutive victories and this year she fought two female exponents from her homeland; first Tayla Robertson and then Shannon O’Connell. She lost to both of them.

Finally, last Friday, September 2, she won the black and gold Oceania crown and is waiting for more challenges.
