Yordenis Ugas returns to the ring this Saturday in Texas to face Errol Spence Jr. in a unification fight for the World Boxing Association (WBA), WBC and IBF welterweight super championship.

Ugas will face one of the best pound-for-pound fighters today, with two belts in his hands, and also has all the odds stacked against him, which has been customary for the Cuban during his career.

Specialists see less chances for Ugas to get the victory but that is nothing new for the current champion of the pioneer organization.

The 35-year-old fighter is used to surprising opponents and that’s how he has managed to earn the status he has today. He debuted in 2010 and his beginnings were not the best as he lost fights against unknowns Johnny Garcia and Emanuel Robles.

However, Ugas kept working hard and in 2016 came his first big win against former world champion Jamal James. From that point on he started a good streak for him, which included a win over Thomas Dulorme and his questionable loss to Shawn Porter in 2019, in which he became even better known despite the adverse result.

After that he beat Omar Figueroa and Mike Dallas to earn his title shot against Abel Ramos, whom he defeated in a tough fight and became WBA champion. In 2021 he defeated Pacquiao in a fight where he wasn’t the favorite, and he did using the best of his boxing  giving status to his career.

Now he is facing the unification, another fight in which he is not a favorite but the boxing world already knows what Ugas is capable of and why he should never be discarded.
