There is no more desirable fight in boxing than the middleweight showdown between WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs), the knockout artist from Karaganda, Kazakhstan, and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 KOs), his WBC counterpart from Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico.

The talk of them fighting has reached fever pitch. Before approving of Canelo’s recent fight with Amir Khan, the WBC stipulated that if he does not fight his mandatory, Triple G, next, he will be stripped of his interim WBC middleweight title.

The two camps are in negotiations and have two weeks to reach an agreement. If they fail to reach an agreement, the WBC will schedule a purse big on May 24.

Despite the machinations, and WBA has decided to not interfere.

“The WBA will not interfere in the Golovkin-Canelo negotiations,” said WBA president Gilberto Jesus Mendoza. “That is the fight the fans want.

“However, should they not reach an agreement, the WBA mandatory fight for Golovkin will be against Daniel Jacobs.”

According to Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions, “From Gennady’s side, it would’ve been done already, this last fight. But we have a great relationship with Golden Boy and with Oscar, and he called me on Sunday, like he promised. Before the fight, I wasn’t so convinced, but with that knockout over Khan and all the fan pressure and the media pressure, I think Oscar and Canelo both understand how big of a fight this can be.”
