The Mexican bon American Mauricio “El Maestro” Herrera managed to take over the World Boxing Association super lightweight 140-pound championship belt, defeating Johan Perez by majority decision on Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

The final score cards were 114-114, 116-112, 116-112 in favor of Herrera who was making his second title shot this year. Perez was defending his crown for the second time.

A clean fight, with closed exchanges and that gave both contenders the opportunity to win. Herrera was always taking the initiative, looking for the fight and teasing Pérez and walking forward. At times, the boxer from Caracas could take advantage of his range, but he was more daring to go to the exchange where he could, at times, take advantage especially in the middle of the bout.

According to the statistics, Herrera landed 227 punches of the 715 punches he threw during the fight, while the former champion managed to connect 170 of the 689 he shot.

Now, Herrera’s record is 21-4 , 7 KO’s while Venezuelan goes to 19-1-1, 13 KO’s.
