Erislandy Lara was far superior to Spike O’Sullivan on Saturday night during their bout at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, and retained his World Boxing Association (WBA) middleweight championship with an eighth round technical knockout.

The 39-year-old Cuban has been able to adapt to a new style and his punching power has been evident in his last few fights. Last night he gave another demonstration against the Irishman, who he knocked down in the fourth round and again in the eighth to score a convincing victory.

The southpaw fighter got the first defense of the WBA 160 lbs. belt thanks to a work of good punching combinations and good waist movement. The veteran stands firm as a great fighter in the category and put on a good show this Saturday.

It was his 29th career win, while he has 3 losses and 3 draws, with 17 knockouts. In O’Sullivan’s case, he dropped his record to 31 wins, 5 losses and 21 knockouts.
