Mexico City’s Zócalo is the place chosen so that this May 21 the Aztec country, accompanied by several of its great champions, will break the world record for the largest boxing class in the world, currently held by Russia. This activity will be supported by the World Boxing Association (WBA).

This was announced last Tuesday, February 22, by Miguel Torruco, member of the WBA board of directors and of the Mexican Chamber of Deputies, Claudia Sheinbaum, head of government of Mexico City, and Mauricio Sulaimán, president of the WBC.

“It will be a national celebration in Mexico City’s Zócalo. We are sure that we will gather more than 50 thousand people in which the whole country is invited,” said Torruco and added: “The idea is to conglomerate as many people as possible and have them participate in the class together with Julio César Chávez and other great champions who will be here.”

“Mexico is a world power in boxing and has a great fan base, the best in the world. They are the force that helps boxers to bring out the best. I always hear those fans screaming and today I want to hear them throwing punches, throwing combinations and uploading them to social networks,” said Mexican legend Erik “Terrible” Morales.

This event will serve to pay a well-deserved tribute to trainer Ignacio “Nacho” Beristáin, a boxing hall of famer who has dedicated his life to the sport and whose resume includes Olympic medalists and world champions he has trained.

For this reason, Mexico hopes to break the record of more than 3,000 people set by Moscow.
