Vergil Ortiz showed that despite the pause of boxing, his speed and strength remain intact. The American boxer defended his World Boxing Association (WBA) Gold Welterweight title in a great way against Samuel Vargas and beat him by TKO in seven rounds in Indio, California.

The main fight of the event, that took place at the Fantasy Springs, faced the WBA Gold Champion in his second defense of the belt against the fierce Colombian boxer. Ortiz came out with a sweeping step from the first minute and attacked the South American with a great jab that was combined with strong hooks and straight rights.

Vargas was not an easy rival for Ortiz, since he responded to each attack of the champion and tried to fight from toe to toe. However, the superiority of the champion was gradually prevailing and, as the rounds passed, he wore away the challenger.

In the fifth round, the fight was about to end but a brave Vargas survived until the bell. Ortiz lowered the intensity in the sixth round but on the seventh he came out with everything and ruthlessly attacked Vargas to force the referee to stop the fight when there were barely two seconds left to finish the round.

Vergil Ortiz maintains his perfect record of 16 KOs in as many fights, and retained his Gold crown for the second time. Meanwhile, Vargas left a balance of 31 wins, 6 losses, 2 draws and 14 KOs.
