After Gervonta Davis nearly had a setback at the weigh-in, raising questions about his weight again, he blasted Hugo Ruiz out in one round to retain his Super Featherweight Super World Championship of the World Boxing Association (WBA).

Davis, who won the championship against Cuellar in April of last year, improved his professional record to 21-0 while scoring his 20th knockout, while “Cuatito” Ruiz took his fifth professional loss, dropping his record to 39-5 with 33 knockouts.

Davis showed his extremely heavy hands from the very start of the fight, as he pressed Ruiz back into the ropes and unleashed power shots that you could hear and feel landing with the cringe-worthiness of knowing that it surely couldn’t last too long.

Ruiz was already bleeding from the nose only a minute into the fight, and the end came before the sound of bell in the first round when he took a knee after a delayed onset of pain from a left hook to the head. He did rise from the knockdown but he did not want to continue – saying “no” and clearly not wanting any more of the champion.

Davis now is becoming a star, in addition to holding he pioneer organizations Super World Championship, and he is looking for the big fights in and around his weight class.
