This week Gustavo “Guty” Espadas received the belt that accredits him as Flyweight Champion of the World Boxing Association (WBA), a title that he won almost 42 years ago when on October 2, 1976, he scored a technical knockout over Alfonso Lopez in the Sports Arena of Los Angeles, California.

Undoubtedly, the Mexican Espadas was a great boxer in his time and is remembered for his great battles. During his reign, which lasted from 1976 to 1978, he made 5 defenses, of which 4 were successful. He lost his belt to the Venezuelan Betulio González in 1978, however, he had not received his title at this time.

For this reason, as soon as Gilberto Jesús Mendoza, current president of the WBA, learned that the delivery of the belt had not been made to a legitimate champion, he made the pertinent steps to correct this error. So through Alfredo Polanco, judge of the agency, he gave him his deserved recognition.

“I could not allow more time to pass. Guty Espadas was a superb boxer and we had to honor his legacy in the ring. So it fills me with pride that during my presidency we have amended this error and given him the recognition he deserves so much.” said Mendoza.

Espadas, who only reigned at 112 pounds, retired in 1984 and left a record of 39 wins, 6 losses, 5 draws and 28 knockouts.
