We should never forget how dangerous the sport of boxing can be.

Friday afternoon at Wing 416 in Chiang Rai, Thailand, WBC Youth World minimumweight champion, Thailand’s Chanachai CP Freshmart (5-1, 2 KOs), defended his title against Dexter Alimento (10-0, 7 KOs), from Iligan City, Lanao del Norte, Philippines.

Alimento had never fought outside his native country and was holding his own against the 105-pound champ. Chanachai brought the fight to the Philippine fighter , but he was getting nailed by hard uppercuts.

The fight was scheduled for 10 rounds. At the end of eighth, the Thai fighter was ahead on all three judges’ scorecards.

At the start of the one-minute rest period between rounds, Chanachai collapsed on his stool. His cornermen frantically called for a doctor and the young champion was removed from the ring on a stretcher.

WBA President Gilberto Jesus Mendoza contacted the Thailand Boxing Federation earlier today to express his concern.

“On behalf of the World Boxing Association Directorate and myself,” wrote Sr. Mendoza, “I would like to let you know that Chanachai CP Freshmart is in our prayers and we hope he recovers soon.”
