Ramón CalatayudRamón Antonio Calatayud won a place in the history of Venezuelan boxing during the mid 1950’s and 70’s, when he was among the top ten of the flyweight division.

He was born in Falcon, Venezuela, but grew up in Maracaibo, Zulia state with Ramoncito Arias. Calatayud started in amateur boxing in 1949 and became professional in 1953 to make 90 fights and retired in 1964 with a record of 77-13-4.

Among his achievements he has the National flyweight Championship in 1953, 1958 flyweight professional boxing Championship of the United States, Latin American flyweight Championship in 1959, and was rated in the World Boxing Association ranking during most of that decade.

After his retirement from boxing, Calatayud, worked as boxing and baseball trainer in various military institution and with children. He was also a physiotherapist in important baseball teams and professional basketball, as the Tigres of Aragua, Caracas Brewers, Crocodiles of Caracas, and Bravos de Margarita.

Ramón Calatayud died last October 26, at the age of 77, after a life devoted to Venezuelan sports.
