The World Boxing Association is pleased to announce that newly crowned WBA Super World featherweight champion Carl “The Jackal” Frampton (23-0, 14 KOs), the master boxer-puncher from Belfast, Northern Ireland, has been named WBA Boxer of the Month for July.

The former EBU, BBBofC Celtic, Commonwealth, and IBF super bantamweight champion won the WBA title in February with a split decision victory over reigning and defending champion Scott Quigg. But no sooner had he defeated Quigg than Frampton announced, to the surprise of many, that he was moving up in weight to challenge WBA Super World featherweight champion Leo Santa Cruz.

Frampton and Santa Cruz met on July 30 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, and it was a barnburner as promised. Both men came to fight. Both men came to win.

Santa Cruz gave it his all and was as thrilling as usual, but boxing is a skill and not a strength sport and Frampton’s skills proved too much for the never-say-die Mexican-American fighting machine. Working behind the jab but not reluctant to engage, at least on his own terms, Frampton’s superiority, based on skill, speed and accuracy, became apparent as the fight progressed.

It was a historic performance for the tough kid from Belfast, who now wants to move up in weight another time to solidify his position as one of the greatest Irish fighters of all time.

In light of his victory over Leo Santa Cruz, the World Boxing Association wants to congratulate WBA Boxer of the Month for July, Carl “The Jackal” Frampton.
