On Friday, April 8, at the Karibe Convention Center in Petionville, Haiti, WBA Fedelatin lightweight champion Evens “The Sun City Kid” Pierre (25-1, 17 KOs), hailing from Port-au-Prince, Haiti, defends his title against tough Tomas Mendez (21-6, 14 KOs), from the Dominican Republic.

Thirty-one-year-old Pierre turned pro in 2008 with a unanimous decision victory of Alvaro Bejerano at the Fantastic Casino in Panama City, Panama. He won the vacant WBA Fedelatin title in 2014 with an early stoppage of Rene Gonzalez. In his next fight, in May of last year, “The Sun City Kid” won the WBA Fedelatin title with a victory over Jesus Cruz Bibiano.

Evens Pierre is currently ranked #8 by the WBA.

“On Haitian ground,” said Pierre, “no foreigner can take my crown, which was gained with enormous sacrifice, not even English world champion Anthony Crolla. I respect my opponent, but he will return home empty-handed.”

The fight’s promoter, Jacques Deschamps, expects Pierre, who has been inactive for 11 months, to put on a good showing in front of his countrymen.

“Evens is pumped up to be fighting in front of his home crowd,” said Deschamps, “and is going to give it his all against a rugged opponent that does not give up.”
