This past Saturday, November 21, Brandon Cook successfully defended his WBA Inter-Continental super welterweight title by stopping Rafael Sosa Pintos via fifth-round TKO at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada.

The 29-year-old native of Ajax, Ontario, is a four-year pro (16-0, 10 KOs) who won the vacant title in June by knocking out Gogi Knezevic in the fourth. Undefeated, “Bad Boy” is 12th-ranked by the WBA.

His 35-year-old opponent from Salto, Uruguay (50-13, 19 KOs), is an 11-year ring vet who last won in October, beating Pablo Perez by unanimous decision. He’s 3-3 in his last six fights. Though currently unranked by the WBA, “El Mono” won the vacant WBA Fedecentro middleweight title in November 2012 by beating Crispulo Javier Andino via unanimous decision.

“I was maybe a little patient at the start because he was moving quite a bit,” said Cook after the fight. “I had to feel him out and cut off the ring a bit more. He just kept going around and around. Finally I opened him up to the body, but it took a little bit. His guard was a lot better than the last fight I had seen.”

Cook expects to be back in the ring in February.
