The World Boxing Association Rankings Committee is pleased to announce that WBA Super World featherweight champion Leo “El Terremoto” Santa Cruz (31-0-1, 17 KOs), from Rosemead, California, by way of Huetamo, Michoacán de Ocampo, Mexico, has been awarded Boxer of the Month for August.

On August 29, 27-year-old Santa Cruz fought former three-division champion Abner Mares (29-1-1 coming in), at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, for the vacant WBA Super World featherweight title.

Mares was Santa Cruz’s toughest opponent to date. He had to dig deep, while revealing new components to his arsenal, to decision the hard-charging Mares.

Honorable Mention for Boxer of the Month goes to WBA World light heavyweight champion Juergen Braehmer (47-2, 35 KOs), from Schwerin, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany.

In his last fight, on September 9 at the Energie Verbund-Arena in Dresden, Sachsen, Germany, 36-year-old Braehmer forced #7 ranked Konni Konrad (22-2, 11 KOs) to quit on his stool at the end of seven rounds.
